Botox is the trade name of the toxin produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. This toxin in large amounts causes a type of food poisoning called botulism. Regardless of the fact that the most fatal complication of botulism is paralysis, scientists have found a way to use it that is beneficial to humans. Direct injection of very small and diluted amounts of poison into specific muscles causes controlled weakening of those muscles. There are 7 types of botulinum toxin serotypes, 5 of which (GFEBA) are effective at the nerve-muscle junction in humans. Dysport and Botox are the trade names of botulinum toxin type A, which is approved by the FDA (and produced by Ipsen and Allergan, respectively)
